Democrats Flip Two Florida State Seats, one in Trump's Mar-a-Lago district
Brian Nathan beat Republican Josie Tomkow in Florida's Senate District 14, a district Trump won by 7 points in 2024. Meanwhile, in House District 87, Emily Gregory beat Jon Maples by 2+ percentage points, a 21 percentage point swing away from Republicans. Mar-a-Lago is located in House District 87, and Trump endorsed Maples. The district was previously held by Republican Mike Caruso, who won it by 19 percentage points just over a year ago.
DOJ Accidentally Gave Congress 'Damning Evidence' Against Trump, Jamie Raskin Says
(Huff Post) President Donald Trump took classified documents related to his private business interests from the White House in 2021, according to materials the Justice Department apparently provided to the House Judiciary Committee. These new disclosures suggest that Donald Trump stole documents so sensitive that only six people in the entire U.S. government had access to them, that the documents President Trump stole pertained to his business interests, and that Susie Wiles, then the CEO of Donald Trumps super PAC, witnessed President Trump showing off a classified map to passengers on his private plane, Raskin said.
US expected to send thousands more soldiers to Middle East, sources say
(Reuters) The Pentagon is expected to send thousands of soldiers from the U.S. Army's elite 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday, adding to a massive U.S. military buildup even as President Donald Trump talks about a possible deal with Tehran to end the war. Reuters first reported on March 18 that Trump's administration was considering deploying thousands of additional U.S. troops, a move that would expand options to include deployment of forces inside Iranian territory.
Chances of a Federal Reserve rate cut fade as inflation worsens
(AP) The jump in gas prices stemming from the war in Iran has had another impact that may also affect many Americans finances: Higher interest rates. Longer-term interest rates have risen quickly since the war began Feb. 28, pushing up the cost of mortgage loans, auto loans, and business borrowing. And with inflation measures likely to rise in the coming months, the prospect of interest rate cuts this year by the Federal Reserve is fading. Wall Street investors instead see the odds rising of an actual rate hike instead.
ICE at airports: Trump's troll move backfires
(Salon) Trump is inflicting harm on plenty of his own voters, and at a time when hes already losing support from large chunks of the electorate that took a chance on him in 2024. Republicans are already expecting heavy losses in Novembers midterm elections, and having a president who is actively making air travel hellish will likely only make it worse.
Trump's Thinly Disguised Contempt for His Own Voters
(Raw Story) While the less than 20% of Americans who identify as MAGA Republicans continue to support nearly every decision Donald Trump makes, his contempt for his most loyal supporters is getting worse, argued writer Amanda Marcotte in an analysis published Tuesday. To Trump and his top brass, like Vance, feeling like they owe anything to anybody, especially to the red-hat yokels who got them into office, is insulting, Marcotte wrote on her Substack. Their resentment at their own voters for actually expecting results is getting worse, and thats starting to be reflected in policy choices.
Trump's USDA cancels $300 million program that helped farmers buy or keep their land: report
(The Independent) The Department of Agriculture has reportedly canceled much of a program that awarded roughly $300 million to projects around the country aimed at supporting farmers from underserved communities. The cuts hit the Biden-era Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program, which awarded the funding across roughly 50 projects since kicking off in 2023, unnamed sources familiar with the move told Politico.
ICE agents record themselves inventing charges after picking up detainee's phone: report
(Raw Story) As the agents approached the jail, witness Reid pulled out her cell phone to record the operation, and was immediately ordered to stop, video reviewed by the Journal revealed. She refused, and she was arrested and charged with felony assault and impeding. However, when agents took Reids phone, placed it inside her bag and put the bag in a government vehicle, it continued to record and captured what Reid characterized as a particularly damning conversation between the arresting agents.
Trump to ease smog rules on summer gasoline to bring down prices, sources say
(Reuters) The Trump administration is expected to announce as soon as Wednesday that it will temporarily lift federal smog-cutting restrictions on summer-blend gasoline to curb rising energy prices stemming from the war on Iran, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The move would make gasoline cheaper by not forcing refiners and retailers to switch to more costly summer blends. The U.S. normally switches to summer gasoline blends to reduce air pollution. These blends have lower volatility, limiting evaporation that can contribute to smog in warmer weather.
