A place to demuck, hang coats.
The second floor was added in 1942. They were doing secret construction work underground and the 2nd floor addition justified having the workmen and equipment there.
So far the news pretty much says it was "facade" that was scrapped. Portico and the overhanging roof and balcony (for the second floor double French doors). One part had more serious damage, but I can't figure out what part of the East Wing it even looks like.
On edit: That was yesterday's news. Today's looks rather more serious. But also that a historical society (an official WH-related one) went through and removed things of historical value, some for reuse, presumably in the new construction).

The East Wing was mostly the First Ladies' domain, but we don't have one of those.
