(25,374 posts)I recall the dread on my HS teachers' faces in December 1984. Some of them could see what was coming down the pike, although they were forbidden to speak of it with students during class. We lost a lot with the defunding of primary and secondary education over decades, including the imposition of an artificially-balanced "neutrality" that highly favored the rich and powerful.
Now those seeds have borne fruit in a society that overvalues celebrity and earthly riches. Billionaires carelessly own the government and the press, violent criminals are set loose upon the public to fray further our threadbare social fabric, Texas churches rewrite educational curricula for the nation, and every gain we've made since the 1930s (real progress) is about to unravel.
If it wasn't public education's job to educate the public to the existence of such threats, then there needs to be a chat about whose responsibility it was. By the time we started listening to warnings, it was already too late, so we have to do better next time should we be lucky enough to get a second chance.
