The Cardinal who arranged for the June 14 Mass at a Chicago field, featuring a video address by Pope Leo, [View all]

is considered a "moderate," according to reports. But he is a moderate in the same way that Pope Francis was a moderate. Compared to the rest of the US Cardinals, he's on the left.

I don't think he's scheduled the event for June 14 as a way to help Trump.

For example, after the massacre in Orlando, FL, he was one of the few Catholic bishops to speak out.

A very few Catholic prelates elsewhere have delivered words of comfort, notably Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago. Cupich was bishop of Spokane until tapped for his post by Pope Francis. In a letter read at an LGBT outreach mass on the night of the massacre, he said:

"For you here today and throughout the whole lesbian and gay community, who are particularly touched by the the heinous crimes committed in Orlando, motivated by hate, driven perhaps by mental instability and certainly empowered by a culture of violence, know this: The Archdiocese of Chicago stands with you. I stand with you."

On the SiriusXM radio program, "America This Week," Cupich was candid: "I don't think sometimes people in positions of leadership in the church really engage gay and lesbian people and talk to them and get to know about their lives."

He was, added Cupich, simply trying to emulate the example set by Pope Francis.
