(58,070 posts)I have never been to Minnesota. However, my family has been friends with the so-called "Minnesota Democratic Mafia" since 1948, when my grandmother became a heavily involved New York fundraiser for the Senate Campaign of the Mayor of Mineapolis (guy named Humphrey). HHH got me my Senate Page job when I was 15, and my dad, as a member of the DC print press, knew them all while he was alive. Mondale was "Fritz" even to me, including while he was a Senator and VP under Carter. Max Kampelman, the arms negotiator, was one of the "circle," and the last two members that I still see, Norm Ornstein and Al Franken, are still around. I have met Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, but never got to know them well. I met Amy Klobuchar at the Emily's List annual thing in DC in 2006, when she made her first Senate run, and was impressed even then. For a place I have never been, I have run into many impressive people who came from there over the years.
