Saw Gov. Tim Walz this morning at my husband's Memorial.

Last edited Fri May 23, 2025, 08:08 AM - Edit history (1)

My husband of 53 years, Phil Castrovinci, died on May 18th of Congestive Heart Failure, coupled with Type II Diabetes, resulting in organ failure.

But he and Tim Walz go way back to late January or early February 2005 when they attended Camp Wellstone together over in St. Paul. Tim had not yet decided to run for Congress and was getting acquainted as to how to start the process. My husband had been involved in Minnesota Politics at the grass roots level since the 2000 election. We both were.

Since that initial meeting, my husband began helping Tim with things, as well as his decision to retire from the Army National Guard. Tim was still teaching and coaching at Mankato West High School at the time. When he did file with the FEC, he announced his official decision and we drove over to Mankato to witness it. We were on his team from the very start. We began to form a good friendship with him and Gwen.

The rest is history as we worked on every Congressional campaign, went to many events for him in the 1st CD, held fundraisers, even on the 2018 Governor's race. 2022 was when we moved from Southeast Minnesota to Eden Prairie.

On Monday, I reached out to Gwen and she responded right away. She was not sure if she and Tim could make the time to come to my husband's Celebration of Life, but they did. Not as Governor and First Lady of the State, but as dear friends who were mourning the loss of a friend along with me. Both Tim and Gwen gave me big hugs. He let me know that Keith Ellison knew(he and Phil were dear friends), Ken Martin (DNC Chair), and others in the Administration knew also. Phil knew many in St. Paul. Tim and Gwen stayed for a bit before having to leave, as to not draw attention away from the main purpose of the event.

I was consoled and told, "We will be in touch."

Tim Walz would have made an awesome VP. But still at the helm of Minnesota, he will remain a dear and close personal friend for the rest of my life anyway. My son did not know his dad and I knew personally the man who would not only be our Congressman for 12 years, but our Governor for almost 8.

ProudMNDemocrat. As a guy who left MN in 2009, I knew of Gov. Walz as a Congressman.
It makes me so proud that he has carried the torch of all the great DFL heroes that MN has given to this nation so exceptionally well and I'm thrilled that you call Tim and Gwen friends.
It takes the (sorry for the Minnesotaism) ISH out of my mouth regarding all the lousy politicians we have and reminds us all there are some great public servants left.
Thank you for sharing such a bright moment in an otherwise sad and painful experience.
May they be a huge part of your grieving process as well.
Love, John

I had the honor to live in St Paul MN for a couple of years,
About 45 years ago.

Minnesota really has some nice fine people.

And St Paul is a great place to live.
Lots of great food from all the immigrants who moved there.

Hmong people.
Somalians

I know you and your late husband must be really good Minnesotans

Thank you for your kind words.

We also got to know and love Paul and Shelia Wellstone as well. When his plane went down in Eveleth in October of 2002, it was if a member of the family had died. Phil went to the Memorial at Williams Arena. I still have the pin he was given from that event. It is on my Democrat hat.

A long time ago….

When I was a college student in St Paul, St Thomas….

I went to listen to Walter Mondale speak to college students at St Thomas,
He had just left office as VP,, so it must of been in 1981…

Mondale gave his speech, and took questions from students for awhile,,
And then we could after he answered those questions,,, walk up
and shake his hand..

I will never forget as Mondale shook my hand….he looked surprised at
the college VP button I was wearing…”Tom Hauser for VP”,,
Mondale laughed and said to me ‘Why would anyone run for VP!”

I told Mondale that it’s was a Frat buddy running for student office.

(on 2nd thought maybe it was Tom Hauser’s brother for VP)

Being involved in State and Local politics afforded my late husband and I opportunities to meet and get to know people like Walter Mondale, Arnie Carlson, Paul Wellstone, Al Franken, and many more who would go on to posts they hold now.

Years ago after Ken Martin became the State Chair of the Minnesota DFL, he saw Phil's Democratic Party shirt he was wearing at a Central Committee meeting and asked where he got it. "My wife made this for me," Well wouldn't you know it! Ken asked to have one made for him as well and he gladly paid my fee. Now he is the Chair of the National Party and will do a fabulous job.

I will do what I can to continue my husband's work to save this fragile democracy for my children and theirs.

I have never been to Minnesota. However, my family has been friends with the so-called "Minnesota Democratic Mafia" since 1948, when my grandmother became a heavily involved New York fundraiser for the Senate Campaign of the Mayor of Mineapolis (guy named Humphrey). HHH got me my Senate Page job when I was 15, and my dad, as a member of the DC print press, knew them all while he was alive. Mondale was "Fritz" even to me, including while he was a Senator and VP under Carter. Max Kampelman, the arms negotiator, was one of the "circle," and the last two members that I still see, Norm Ornstein and Al Franken, are still around. I have met Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, but never got to know them well. I met Amy Klobuchar at the Emily's List annual thing in DC in 2006, when she made her first Senate run, and was impressed even then. For a place I have never been, I have run into many impressive people who came from there over the years.

and a loss to all of us. I lived in Minneapolis at the time-actually in MN for about 25 years near Lake Harriet. We used to roller blade around the lake --at the time. U of Minneapolis--MN is my alma mater.
Grieve as you have to--it is goof for the soul. But it does get better--good memories stay with us.

So, I will pile on.

“When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical is madness. To surrender dreams — this may be madness. Too much sanity may be madness — and maddest of all: to see life as it is, and not as it should be!”

― Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, Don Quixote

Somewhere, I know Phil is smiling, maybe even laughing a bit, because he fought the good fight and taught so many others to do the same.

You were lucky to have such deeply held, common values with your beloved; the rest of us were lucky to have the two of you walking your deeply ethical, compassionate walk.

I'm glad you have Tim Walz's friendship as you grieve. I hope you have lots of other support, too.
