So... a suggestion, if you're determined to zotz 'Editorials and Other Articles"? [View all]
Maybe replace it with something else that is oriented towards sharing links to and snippets of longer, broader, more in-depth reads, for those of us who like to find that stuff and occasionally like to discuss it, regardless of "Topic"?
I don't look for Topics. I look for quality articles on any topic. Not necessarily current news, and maybe not "News" at all. Certainly not the fast-feed here's-a-thing of General Discussion.
Honestly, I don't even LIKE "topics" much. I guess it's sorta useful to know what topic a poster thinks this article or that clip or some meme or a here's-what-happened-to-me-today story falls under, but I don't really look for the topic.
I always thought of E&OA as a combination of well, the Editorial page of a good newspaper, and the 'Sunday magazine' section where they put the long reads and Pulitzer candidates and serious analysis stuff. Could be on any topic, the point is, it's where the story (on whatever topic) is more than just what came off the wire, padded out with a few details.
Granted, that's not what DU is primarily for or about - a forum like this is very much a stream-of-consciousness representation of what's happening and what people want to say to each other about it. But it's also nice to have a place to share the meatier, less of-the-moment, stuff, too.
So, maybe a "Long Reads" forum? Or a "Thinky Bits" forum? To replace Editorials and Other Articles if you're just itching to get rid of it?
hopefully,
Bright
