While there is time for your father, has he, or will you visit an elder law attorney? You are going to face a burden with your mom. Prepare emotionally as best you can but also try to prepare for future legal difficulties.

Also, if either of your parents are veterans, get in touch with your local V.A. office as soon as you can.

Again, I'm sorry for your sad news.
