1. What would you attribute to the gain in useage would be? Is it a defense mechanism?

Does it bring the people closer? A solidarity issue?

As an old, former Southern Protestant Christian (forced at childhood and abandoned quickly) and currently devout atheist, I have always struggled to understand why the Jews have always been so mistreated. I have a feeling that it is not based upon their interaction with Jesus of Nazareth as much as jealousy of a group that is largely well educated and economically successful. (at least that is my impression)
