I've always read the Major Arcana as archetypal influences that everyone experiences at some point or another in their lives. They can (and often do) represent major milestones or crossroads in life, but not always. So much is dependent on context within the reading.

I view the Minor Arcana as the details in things -- smaller (but still important) influences that help shape our experiences. Again, much of the interpretation depends on the context within a reading. Sometimes the Major Arcana takes a minor role while the Minor takes on the major, and vice versa.
