school football team.
He was playing for Idaho but helping coach his Colton, WA high school team. I was a sophomore TE on the Lewiston, ID junior varsity. They made us play those guys, after they had won their second consecutive small school state title. That was normal for us. We played all the small school varsities in the area. Getting your ass kicked as a soph, made you fearless the next two years on the varsity, or so they said.
In my case, I went against Mikes brother Pat, who started at DE for Notre Dame the next year. That meant getting up looking out my ear hole about every other play.
Our coach had a plan to intimidate them. On the first sound their QB made, the defense fired out and hit everyone as hard as they could. After a five-yard penalty, their tailback broke the next one for about a 70-yard TD! LOL
Mike showed up at a blood drive I was working one day and I mentioned playing against those guys and that was the first thing he brought up. "The never shoulda done that", he said. Ya think? Our coach is still around and I told him that and he laughed his ass off!
