The jabiru is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It sometimes wanders into the United States, usually in Texas, but has been reported as far north as Mississippi. It is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay.

Meaning of Name: Jabiru: Tupi (Native Brazilian) yabi’ru, iambyrú= swollen neck, or very large neck. mycteria: Gr. mukterizo= large nose or beak.



Jabiru. (Considered the symbol bird of the Pantanal where it is the largest flying bird). Scientific name: Jabiru mycteria, Brazilian name: Tuiuiú. Class: Birds, Order: Ciconiiformes, Family: Ciconiidae. Feeding: Fish, molluscs, reptiles, insects and even small mammals. Geographical Distribution: Occurs throughout the Brazilian Territory, except part of the Northeast Region. It also occurs from Mexico to Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
