In a nutshell, inmates released in 2009 served an average of 2.2 years for a drug offense, 2.3 years for a property offense, and 5 years for a violent offense. So, it does look like there are overall differences in length of sentence served based on the type of offense. However, the Pew study also points out that there are significant differences between jurisdictions.

For example, using the same 2009 data, Michigan had an average sentence length of 4.3 years for all offense types (the longest in the U.S.) and North Dakota had the shortest sentence length of 1.3 years. So, where the offense was prosecuted is important to determining variations in sentence length. It may be the case that there is only a minor difference in sentence length for violent versus non-violent offenses where you live.
