...they should be because they are required to connect unreliable systems with vast land footprints to redundant but reliable systems.

All of the wind industrial parks in California, spread over thousands of square miles of destroyed wilderness cannot and have not produced as much electricity on a year as the Diablo Canyon nuclear plant produces every year on a 12 acre footprint.
