Is meat the new toilet paper?

As meat and poultry plants around the country struggle to stay open in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, grocery stores in Rhode Island are seeing a spike in demand that has forced them to limit the amount of meat shoppers can buy in each visit.

But, unlike the run on toilet paper in March during the early days of the crisis, merchants predict shoppers will have less difficulty finding beef, pork and chicken.

“I think we’re going to be OK. Everybody just needs to take a deep breath,” said Sue Budlong, spokeswoman for Dave’s Fresh Marketplace. “Don’t buy 50 packages.”

Dave’s has instituted a limit of three packages of chicken and three packages of beef per customer, Budlong said Friday.
