"Subterranean Homesick Blues" is considered both the first "rap" song and the first modern music video. The video's cue cards, written by Bob Dylan, Donovan, Allen Ginsberg, and Bob Neuwirth, even have intentional misspellings.

The lyric "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows" inspired the name of the radical left-wing group the Weather Underground.

Chas Chandler of The Animals said Dylan told him the song was about "people living after the Bomb was exploded."

Bob Dylan's song structure was inspired by Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business."

The lyrics draw inspiration from Jack Kerouac's The Subterraneans and a quote by Satchel Paige.
