Kanye West sued by Texas pastor after allegedly sampling his sermon on 'Donda' album [View all]

Kanye West is being sued by a Texas pastor who claims the rapper and producer illegally sampled more than a minute of one of his sermons for a song on his 2021 album "Donda."

According to NBC 5 DFW, Bishop David Paul Moten of the Joy of the Lord Worship Center in Victoria, Texas has filed a suit against West for allegedly using 70 seconds of audio from one of his undated sermons to create "Come to Life," a song about religion, loneliness and finding a path forward following his divorce with ex-wife Kim Kardashian. The song runs more than five minutes and opens with the voice of a pastor in mid-sermon.

"My soul cries out 'Hallelujah' and I thank God for saving me," the sampled voice Moten alleges is his says. "In the name of Jesus."

Moten claims in his suit that West sampled his oration without asking for permission or providing compensation. The preacher is also suing Def Jam Recording, UMG Recordings and West's label G.O.O.D. Music, saying that the parties involved in making and distributing the album engaged in "willfully and egregiously sampling sound recordings of others without consent or permission."
