i’ve done a fair amount of fundraising in my time, including arts orgs. ppl need a focus, a reason to give AT THIS MOMENT. and honestly, i’d bet good money that many check ARE written by ppl who wouldnt b caught dead in some of those get ups, and who dont go to fancy parties. there r many who just quietly support the cause. and many who write small checks that add up.
this kind of event gives a lot of exposure, a lot of pr without which orgs like the met wd not survive.

it’s just how human brains work, and that’s y they do it.
