I remember reading a quote from President Eisenhower, back in the sixties. He was sure that the ultra-right-wing cultists would never take control of the USA, because they wanted to pull the US back to the nineteenth century. Or something like that. My mother was a Republican because her mother's ancestors had been in the original 19th-century Republican Party, founded by Abolitionists and advocates for Black people's rights. I will never forget her gradual shift to the Democratic Party, or the shocked look on her face, not long before she died, as she said, "I guess I am voting for all Democrats this time!" I was always a Democrat, because I watched on TV as they kicked out the racist Dixiecrats, and because of President Johnson's civil rights bill. These current right-wing Republican leaders have voiced the desire to take our country back to the era when children worked in exhausting, dangerous factory jobs and women (and others) stayed in "their places" and white male bullies ran the country. Trump has said that only stupid families failed to become rich in the old days. And he has recently advocated that we jump back into the late 19th century, before the social reforms. These people have reacted badly to the loss of oligarchy in our country. That is why the historians call them "reactionaries."
