In reply to the discussion: How a Rich Kid Politician Was Spun as a Working Class 'Oysterman' [View all]peggysue2
(12,257 posts)I've read these stories about Platner previously. The whole oysterman thing has been a way to verify his 'working-class' credentials. Left out details recently exposed are that Platner received a grant to buy into his business, a grant normally awarded to underserved entrepreneurs: black, women and veterans. Platner is, indeed, a veteran but he's hardly an "underserved' community member. His mother owns several businesses, two of which are restaurants, which Platner admits are his biggest customers. His father is an attorney and his grandfather was a distinguished architect.
Coming from a privileged background, of course, doesn't mean you'e incapable of serving the public or maintaining their trust. Massaging Platner's profile as just an ordinary working stiff, however, isn't truthful. You add this to the all the other baggage Platner's carrying and it leads to . . . questions about his character and whole populist appeal.
I get a John Fetterman vibe from Platner which may be unfair. But there it is.
Too much deja vu.
