(10,653 posts)I'll try to keep things super brief. My two year nursing program is starting, then BSN and masters, blah blah. So I set a June deadline to pull way, way back from posting online and am just finishing up DU related things this morning.
Out of the gate, let me say your first eight paragraphs there are how I see it as well. Wouldn't change a word. Although relitigating Biden's term wouldn't do much political good right now, I'd still save that somewhere for future use. It's well-articulated.
I don't disagree with the second half of your post either. Agreed that we are sitting in a cultural and psychological moment where technocratic policy plays much less of a role than how political positions and posturing play into peoples' view of themselves, their communities, and how that fits into the broader national identity. If people perceive no one is looking out for them, they will act accordingly. They'll gravitate. Even if the actual policies they're gravitating toward will do the express opposite of what they say they want. (I also think American voters very much want certain policies that we're in denial about. Particularly in regards to things like immigration. No, they want this. They very much voted for it. Even voters who didn't go for Trump aren't all that sad about deportations and sewing up the border. Just not that extreme ICE shit that's being managed).
That said, this was an interesting exchange, and I do appreciate you taking the time for it. We don't agree on everything. I still say our political message hasn't been great for a long time. And while I don't disagree about billionaires and social media, I do think there's a blind spot about how our party comes off culturally. These recent stories about "How do we talk to humans?" brainstorming is just . . . yeah. That really is putting a hat on a hat at this point.
But this: "Is it possible to be a daddy figure WITHOUT the cruelty and the punching down on marginalized populations?" is a really intriguing question. I definitely think it's possible, but it could make for a good OP. Someone (who is not me) could probably write a great article about it. It would be a useful political tool to have in one's arsenal going forward.
Because the world really isn't about to get any better. The 30s and 40s are going to be a shitshow.
