On this date in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in a ceremony presided over by William Howard Taft, then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and President Warren G. Harding. The speeches emphasized national unity, with little emphasis on Lincoln's role in ending slavery.

The dedication ceremony was segregated.
