I never said manipulation of the news is a new thing. I said it's easier now because of the technology. Just like I never said Trump was the cause of this growing trend, only that his ascending to the presidency was one of the results.
Hitler's use of radio--then a relatively new technology--made it far easier to manipulate public opinion in Germany, especially once the Nazis had control of the airwaves. Indeed, there's a whole literature on the Nazi use of radio and how it helped to shape Germany's political and cultural discourse. The left in Germany ignored or at least underestimated the impact of this new technology, and we saw the result.
The right in the US learned that lesson--hence Rush Limbaugh and "talk radio." In the last election it harassed social media and we saw the result.
To ignore these developments by saying, in essence, "same old same old" is to stick our heads in the sand.
And to pretend something unpleasant or even dangerous just isn't happening is also human nature.
