Because They Can.
Not because it's expensive to make the drugs. Or it's expensive developing the drugs while using Grad students and facilities at universities to defray costs of research.
These drugs are "so expensive" they're actually giving away coupons and "assistance" to almost 60% of patients taking those drugs, while only charging insurance companies half of what they claim the drug costs.
Actually, keeping lawyers on retainer, making the commercials and buying Ad time costs more than making the drugs.
If they charged a fair mark-up and weren't concerned about constant quarterly growth in returns, they'd still make enough money to make shareholders and the C-suite happy. And be able to continue research.
It's pretty much greed and end stage Capitalism. Need to be nice to those investors, or your nice little pharmacy might run into a bit of trouble....
