Related: About this forumLet's talk about Trump, Greenland, Louisiana, and failure to understand the situation.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Trump, Greenland, Louisiana, and a failure to understand the situation.
On Sunday, Trump announced that he'd appoint Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry to serve as the US Special Envoy to Greenland. Greenland is a special territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Landry is not accredited by the kingdom for any diplomatic role. When making the announcement, Trump said, "Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our national security and will strongly advance our country's interests for the safety, security, and survival of our allies and indeed the world." Landry said it was a "honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US."
Denmark's foreign minister indicated they would be summoning the US ambassador, which is kind of a big deal diplomatically, and said, "I am deeply upset by this appointment of a special envoy, and I am particularly upset by his statements, which we find completely unacceptable."
Okay, let's get into the realities of this. Landry has no real foreign policy experience and certainly not the kind that would be necessary to facilitate something like this.
Aside from that, it isn't even going to be his full-time job. He's still going to serve as governor of Louisiana. I wonder how the people in Louisiana feel about their governor moonlighting in a foreign country instead of, you know, taking care of their state? I'm going to put a link down below to show that Louisiana currently ranks 50th in a survey that considers the economy, infrastructure, public safety, environment, the fiscal stability of the state, health care, education, opportunity for residents, and so on. 50th. Maybe the governor has more important things on his plate?
In short, this is a political stunt to appeal to the base domestically. The idea is to continue the Trumpian talking points and normalize the idea of expanding the US. But that doesn't mean there won't be major international implications to it. Denmark is furious, understandably so. Imagine if Mexico dispatched an envoy to Texas to attempt to make it part of their country? The US would see that as a major provocation.
But here's the twist. This whole thing is a problem because of Trump's foreign policy. Trump has for about a decade ran around screaming about how the US doesn't need NATO, but now it needs this huge resource rich island that's a self-governing territory of Denmark. Denmark is a NATO ally. He wants access to the minerals and wants the strategic positioning. We already had access via the NATO alliance. What does he think that in the middle of a critical war, Denmark, a steadfast ally, would deny us access?
It needs to be clearly understood by Americans that every single time Trump talks about the US need for Greenland or Canada, he's admitting his entire philosophy when it comes to NATO is faulty and wrong. The US needs NATO as much as the European members need the US. That's why the alliance has endured so long.
Anyway, it's just a thought. You all have a good day.
