Donald Trump reignited the Greenland debate during a bilateral meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the NATO Summit in Ankara. Trump argued the United States should never have returned Greenland to Denmark, calling the Arctic island vital for global security and U.S. defense. He also claimed Greenland is far more important to Washington than Copenhagen, adding a new chapter to the ongoing geopolitical dispute. - 07/08/2026.

(117 posts)1. The U.S. Has Never Owned Greenland
A Few Words From the Internet:
For over 300 years, Greenland has been a territory of Denmark. Today, Greenland is an independent, autonomous territory inside the Kingdom of Denmark.
The U.S. still has a Defense Agreement with Denmark that allows American troops to use military bases there. However, the land is governed entirely by the people of Greenland and Denmark.

That's why we still have a base there, but #rump thinks that means we "owned" it and shouldn't have "given it back."
