Related: About this forumThere's another fake quote near the top of the Greatest page. (UPDATE: See replies 3 & 4.)

This one worded strongly enough that it might be putting Rosanne Cash in some danger, judging by some of the reactions to it that I saw on X earlier today.
Apparently some fool somewhere else online thought it would be cute to create a meme, a mockup of a social media post with her photo, and started posting that fake message online a few days ago. I checked her social media posts on Facebook, Instagram and Threads, and it wasn't posted there. She doesn't have an account on X. But that fake message she supposedly wrote has been copied and quoted by a lot of people on X and those three Meta platforms who couldn't be bothered to check whether it was real.
There's been plenty of time for news outlets to report on the quote, IF it was real. It wasn't, and they didn't fall for it.
No one should have. It takes only a couple of minutes googling her name and unusual keywords from the quote to see if it's been reported as news.
But now it's on DU's Greatest page with over 200 recs.
We really need a system to identify an OP with a quote or story that isn't reliably sourced.
Especially when the fake quote is worded so harshly it might cause a potentially dangerous backlash against someone for something they didn't say. That fake quote is making new enemies for Rosanne Cash.

(62,854 posts)looked at dozens of results pages and lots of Threads and Facebook posts on those Google results pages that quoted her, all recent posts from the last few days, but found none that linked to that Feb. 6 Threads post. I looked at the top of her Threads account, where the most recent post was 4/20 about songwriter Don Schlitz dying, and scrolled back as far as I could before Threads stopped me and said I had to log in, which I can't do. The oldest post I could get to was Feb. 23, the one about the blizzard in NY that says Monday morning on 7th Avenue.
I also scrolled back as far as I could on Facebook and Instagram. And I searched for her name on X to see if there had been any reference to that quote before the last few days, and there hadn't been.
And there were absolutely no news stories about it. Which is especially baffling given how strong that statement was.
It makes no sense that what she'd said a week earlier made the news, but this harsher comment about Trump supporters didn't, and didn't get quoted widely on social media until almost 3 months later.
As far as I could tell from searching, that post wasn't there and there weren't any posts referring to that quote until a few days ago.
In fact, when I do a Google search using site:threads.net and keywords so I'm searching for
rosanne cash "twist your humanity" site:threads.net
which should definitely turn up her own post on Threads, the only Threads post that turns up is one from Thomas Michael Corrigan, and not her post. Corrigan's post with part of that quote and no date, looking like just one more of the posts the last few days with that quote.
I spent hours searching for a post of her own with those words, and news stories about it, and other people referring to it before the last few days. And none of that showed up. Whether searching Google, then searching X and Reddit separately, then scrolling back on Meta - but now I see I got the "Log in to see more from rosannecash." message on Threads just short of that old post.
So I was wrong, despite having done a very long online search every way I was able to search. I'm especially confused that my search specific to Threads didn't find her post.
And somehow that 2/6 post of hers that should have been all over social media and the news as soon as she made it didn't make the news at all, and after the immediate replies on Threads just disappeared from social media for more than two months, until it popped up in late April, on both X and Meta, apparently unrelated to anything she'd said lately.
This is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen with social media.
But the post is there, even though it eluded all that searching and still won't show up when I search for it.
Your direct link works. I can't explain why search didn't.
I just tried using that Google search string with threads.net on Bing in case that might've worked better. Bing gave me nothing but results about Roseanne Barr. Bing search seems to be completely broken. I just tried it with DuckDuckGo as well, and that didn't offer results on Roseanne Barr, but told me
but when I removed site:threads.net from the search string, it turned up a few results from the last 24 hours from DU, Instagram.and Facebook, but nothing else. So both Bing and DuckDuckGo are much worse than Google, though Google failed to find the 2/6 Threads post from.Rosanne Cash.
I'm exhausted, and baffled, and very sorry I was wrong, but I searched for hours, as carefully as I could, and never found the link you posted.
How did you find the link? Can you log in to Threads? I'd assumed Google would have had all of Rosanne's Threads posts.

(17,137 posts)I used Google, with this search string:
Rosanne Cash If there are any Trump supporters who still follow me, I would ask that you unfollow me and do it now. I don't want anyone who supports this malignant, racist, corrupt man and his sycophants to lurk in my feed. I'm so sick of being sickened by them and if you can twist your humanity into a knot to defend them, I don't want to find 'common ground. There is none.
It was the 14th result, which does seem pretty odd, as the search string seems to match with the actual Threads' post much better than it matches any of the first 13 results. I don't think Google works as well as it used to.
I don't trust any of these memes that use an image of a supposed social media post rather than a link to the actual post. There are reasons to do so, some even valid, but often it's done because there is no actual post. If a meme post interests me at all, I attempt to verify it before giving it any credence.

(62,854 posts)I tried a wide variety of shorter search strings, but - other than results from the last few days with what I suspected was a fake quote - just found what she'd said back in January with very different wording addressing Trump supporters who might want to unfollow her. I'd posted that in reply 20 in that thread.
I just tried the very long string you'd used, and her Feb. 6 post on Threads turned up as the 13th result - with every one of the dozen results before it from just the last few days.
I have a lot less confidence in Google than I'd had yesterday. And it's still mind-boggling that the search string with Rosanne Cash's name in it that I'd used for Google, when copied to Bing got nothing there but results about Rosanne Barr. What have the tech lords done to search???
I've just discovered, too, that the news media and social media aren't nearly as reliable as I'd thought they were at reacting to actual quotes that should get their attention. Despite lots of responses on Threads, and her comments in January getting attention earlier, what she said February 6 was apparently ignored elsewhere until there were suddenly all those social media posts on different platforms starting about April 28. That's a REALLY odd delayed reaction to something posted by a celebrity MAGA was already unhappy with.
I will still look for news stories to try to verify any quote whose source isn't identified. But now I'll have to wonder if some very striking social media post had slipped past everyone who'd normally react to it. (And I'll have a lot less confidence in Google finding it.)
