... also I realize that Americans are fairly pushy and ask extremely personal questions in casual conversation. Also I understand that Japanese are very quiet and cognizant of others space and quiet when on conveyances. We Americans are the opposite.

I lived in Japan in the 1970s, and I have been back more than 20 times since, and I have never experienced this. If the train is crowded, they will sit next to me. If it isn't, well, I prefer not to be crowded up against other people if there are less crowded spots.
