Catastrophe

Suddenly, an unexpected change
Everything taken
Nothing makes sense
Anymore

A clear blue day becomes a swirling storm
Eating the ground and all things attached
Burning through the city
Ripping out the buildings
A meal for a storm
Unsatisfied

--

An act of God, you might say
But does God hate us so much
That He would destroy us for no reason
But capricious revenge for our frequent sins?
Lowly animals we
Do we really deserve that end?

Leave that question for the clerics
While we find the victims
Warm them, comfort them
In their pain and loss
No rationality in their catastrophe
No justification for their suffering

--

We all live in vulnerability
To destruction
From causes natural
And even worse, man-made
Eventually, our number comes up
Sometime in our lives
To strike us to the heart
In the wreckage
