NJ Transit Train Engineers Strike, Disrupting Travel to NYC

(Bloomberg) -- New Jersey Transit locomotive engineers started striking early Friday, triggering a shutdown of the agency’s rail service and disrupting travel for hundreds of thousands of commuters.

The walk-out of 450 engineers started at 4 a.m. New York time when workers took to picket lines at major hubs including New York’s Penn Station and outside NJ Transit’s headquarters in Newark. The demonstrations mark the first railroad strike in more than 40 years for the agency.

The National Mediation Board has called for a meeting between the two parties on Sunday, and while talks could resume sooner, it signals the strike may last at least two more days.

The move is forcing riders to find other modes of travel into New York City or to work remotely, wreaking havoc in the biggest US metropolitan area. All 12 of NJ Transit’s commuter rail lines are shuttered, though the system’s buses and light-rail service continue.
