In this video I discuss the Revolution that is taking place in UK Politics. The UK has been governed by either the Conservative Party of the Labour Party for over 100 years however in the recent elections both parties were trounced by the newly formed Reform UK. This party is lead by Nigel Farage who previously lead the successful Brexit campaign for the UK to leave the European Union. Why is this happening and does this mean that Nigel Farage will be the next UK Prime Minister?

(41,376 posts)Farage will NOT be PM- or at least I bloody hope not. He has 5 MPs at the moment out of 650. And they hate each other almost as much as they hate everyone else.
The majority of people don't bother to vote at local elections and by-elections. Those who do vote consist disproportionately of protest voters.
Labour do need to treat this as a wake-up call to stop imitating the Tories and punishing disabled people and pensioners. If people wanted cuts and austerity, they'd have voted Tory. I've taken to calling Rachel Reeves 'Georgina Osborne'.
Rather than running scared of Reform, Labour might take a look at the very successful recent campaigns- rather against the odds- of left-of-centre parties in Canada and Australia, and see if there's anything that could be imitated.
But let's not get *too* panicky,

(14,860 posts)That's not a welcome prospect. Round here a bunch of Farage supporters won control of the Parish Council a few years back, only to fall out with each other spectacularly.
At present Reform are looking like they will be mounting a strong challenge in the area where I live, not helped by the City Council wanting to build heavily on the Green Belt. Reform are jumping heavily on the nimby bandwagon here, and seeking to scapegoat immigrants for said proposed development to an absurd degree.
What they don't realise is that encouraging people to object to development for racist reasons will not work at all. People being offended by brown skinned folk walking to work is simply not a material consideration that any planning department will consider. They might win elections this way, but they won't be able to keep any promises they make on the campaign trail.
Derbyshire County Council has just gone Reform and is at risk of both these things. Personal fallings out (many of them have fallen out with local Tories over such matters) and being unable to keep any campaign promises (something exacerbated by the terrible state of the County Council finances).

(12,018 posts)Im sorry but they can get straight in the bin with their new immigration white paper. Ive been paying taxes for three goddamn years on my visas. Ive got a five year skilled worker visa and now I may have to wait 10 year for ILR?
This is horseshit and it penalises the hardest working immigrants in the country who pay a shitload in fees and are thanked with crushing restrictions.
