Beaumont mayoral candidates debate key issues ahead of runoff election

BEAUMONT — The runoff race for Beaumont's mayoral seat saw incumbent Mayor Roy West and former mayor Robin Mouton engage in a debate, addressing key issues and their visions for the city.

Mayor West began the debate with the first opening statement. Both candidates were asked to distinguish themselves from their opponent. West highlighted his administration's contributions to the Real-Time Crime Center, a project initiated during Mouton's tenure. Mouton highlighted the many expansions that began during her tenure as mayor and is excited to possibly be a part of it again.

Mouton faced questions about her visibility and transparency, particularly regarding her decision to decline monthly interviews with a local radio station. She was asked how she would address criticism about her availability compared to West.

The candidates also tackled the topic of racial division in Beaumont, a concern expressed by many community leaders and residents. Both were asked if they believed such division existed and how they would appeal to all voters.
