Oregon lawmakers advance bipartisan bill to replace faithless electors
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A bipartisan group of Oregon lawmakers advanced a bill on Wednesday that they say will strengthen election integrity in the state.
Oregon Senate Majority Leader Kayse Jama (D- E Portland, Boring & Damascus) and Minority Leader Bruce Starr (R- Dundee) advanced Senate Bill 1509, which aims to hold presidential electors accountable to Oregon voters.
Every state gets electors equal to the number of U.S. senators and representatives in each state. For example, Oregon has eight electoral votes based on the state having two U.S. senators and six House representatives. Electors typically vote for a candidate based on the popular vote in their state.
In presidential elections, members of the electoral college in each state cast a vote, totaling 538 votes nationwide, to elect a president. Presidential candidates need at least 270 votes to win an election.
