GOP accuses Gulfport mayoral candidate (D) of buying votes, election fraud
GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - The Republican Party of Mississippi is accusing Gulfport Democratic mayoral candidate Sonya Williams-Barnes of voter fraud.
Party chairman Mike Hurst shared the accusations in a press conference on Wednesday afternoon. Hurst said they had been informed of free meal vouchers to voters and a hangout with Williams-Barnes, including a free brunch for a vote.
“Let me say this loud and clear: that is illegal, that is immoral, and that is un-American,” said Hurst at the presser.
The complaint suggested a violation of Mississippi Code 23-15-889, which focuses on buying and selling votes. The code states it is unlawful to sell your vote or provide anything of value for a vote.
