Detroit City Council district candidates seek to help neighborhoods, boost affordable housing
Detroiters will select their district-level City Council members in five of seven districts in the Nov. 4 general election, with races that include at least two current state lawmakers, one former councilman, and community advocates.
City Council President Mary Sheffield and District 7 Council member Fred Durhal III are vacating their seats, as both ran for mayor. Sheffield will face the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. in November.
Chrysler retiree Renata Miller and Detroit Board of Police Commissioner Willie Burton, meanwhile, are vying for Sheffield's District 5 seat, and Progress Michigan Managing Director Denzel McCampbell and state Rep. Karen Whitsett are competing for the District 7 slot, now held by Durhal.
The District 2 race will be a rematch between Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway and former Councilman Roy McCalister Jr., who lost to Whitfield Calloway 55%-45% in 2021.
