Longtime Michigan Supreme Court Justice Michael Cavanagh dies at 84

Michael Cavanagh, a Detroit native who was a longtime Michigan Supreme Court justice and father of current Chief Justice Megan Cavanagh, has died, his family announced Wednesday. He was 84.

The retired judge's daughter and the state Supreme Court's current Chief Justice, Megan Cavanagh, announced her father's passing in a statement Wednesday.

"My Dad and I were very close, and I feel so fortunate to have learned so much from a leader who dedicated his life to public service," she said in the statement. "Though Mike Cavanagh was much more than a dedicated public servant, much more than a great judge and justice, and much more than a tremendous father, husband, and grandpa. He embodied what it means to be a compassionate, thoughtful and loving human being."

A visitation is planned for 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 28 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 1730 East Grand River Ave. in East Lansing, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., according to the Cavanagh family.
