(2,949 posts)I'm originally from Missouri and anything over 3' drop gets a fence (a bit of an exaggeration), on the road or on a trail. We're now down in the Southeast and have vacationed in California a few times since living there. I've warned my family about the SE and CA because in those areas your safety is in your own hands. We were driving to King's Canyon National Park and there was nothing between us and a 1200' drop than some paint and plastic reflectors. This went for miles. Highway 1: how could you ever fence every curve there? When I lived in CA, a young couple slid off the road where Hwy 1 and Hwy 101 split north of the Golden Gate bridge. This has to be one of the busiest areas in the country, but it took authorities about 2-3 weeks to find their bodies.
Drive carefully, the world isn't safe.
