Tonight on Amanpour and Company, Tuesday, May 5th, 2026
F. Gregory Gause III
Professor Emeritus, Texas A&M University Bush School / Associate Fellow, Middle East Institute
Is the ceasefire in Iran holding firm? Since the U.S. launched "Project Freedom," a plan to guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian and American militaries have traded threats and exchanged fire. President Trump declined to say whether the ceasefire is holding, but Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said during a Pentagon briefing that it is still in effect. Among Iran's targets is the United Arab Emirates, which today said its air defenses encountered a missile threat from Iran. When the UAE quit OPEC, it exposed a growing rift with Saudi Arabia that is reverberating through the Persian Gulf and beyond. Gregory Gause, an influential expert on Saudi Arabia and the region, joins the show to discuss.
Matthew Hollingworth
Assistant Executive Director for Global Operations, World Food Programme
The United Nations says a third of the global fertilizer supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.N.'s World Food Programme warns that 45 million people could be pushed into acute hunger due to the war in Iran. Matthew Hollingworth helps run the WFP's global operations, contending with crises from Lebanon to Sudan. Hollingworth joins the program from Somalia, where increasing fuel and food prices are having particular impact.
Nancy Northup
President, Center for Reproductive Rights
There's a new threat to reproductive rights in America. On Monday, the Supreme Court restored telehealth and mail access to the abortion pill mifepristone, placing a temporary hold on a decision by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals that required the medication to be obtained in person. Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, joins the show to discuss.
Barbara F. Walter
Professor of International Affairs, U.C. San Diego / Author, "Political Violence Is Here to Stay"
The temperature of American politics has been rising for some time. The United States has seen a troubling spate of violent attacks across the political spectrum, including a recent attempt on President Trump's life. Americans are asking what is behind this dangerous uptick in political violence. Professor Barbara F. Walters offers her answer to that question.
