Photography
Related: About this forumYesterday evening, a bunch of us photographers got on a bus and were driven to the Griffith Observatory.
The folks at Paul's Photo call these "walkabouts." And wow, did we walk! Almost 2 hours worth.
I got a few photos. I also realized that my nighttime skills need a lot of work! These have some merit and I hope you'll enjoy them. They were all taken with my Olympus Mark IV camera and the 12-45mm Pro lens.

You give me hope.

(3,988 posts)Griffith Park and many other places.....Farmers Market photos are my very favorite! I also thought you did an excellent job when you found special times for the moon. Thank you for being a wonderful member of Democratic Underground!

There will be Farmer's Market photos up in a little while, from today.

(64,982 posts)Have you ever gone there early in the morning, around the time of the June gloom? As the sun comes up the basin is blanketed I over cast clouds. I would just sit there as the sun came up and watch the clouds burn off.
Its such an amazing place
CaliforniaPeggy
(155,891 posts)I've never had the opportunity to do that. It sounds like a miraculous moment. But it's some distance from me.
Thanks for your beautiful memory . . .

(4,945 posts)Love that place. Been to the observatory many times. Took many out of towners there when they came to visit and I lived in the area.
Thank you for sharing!

(155,891 posts)It was quite the experience. My legs are still recovering from all the walking! I do expect to make a full recovery, however.
YW! I love to share!

(19,096 posts)I am urging you, if you haven't done it yet, to go visit Stahl House. We got the tour that started in daylight, and slowly transformed into night. You have to plan when you want to go and grab it when it becomes available; as they fill up fast.
We were doubly blessed with clear skies and a full moon on the night we went. You could certainly hone your night-time skills here and get some stunning pictures::
CaliforniaPeggy
(155,891 posts)It sounds like a great visit, but I tend to be a bit passive about this sort of thing. I'm old and rather tired, so I'll go if someone else is doing the planning, logistics and etc!
I have to say, though, that your photo gives me second thoughts. Thanks!
And I'm glad you enjoyed my photos.

(155,891 posts)The store often has little trips like this one; they also run bigger trips to Africa, or to see the polar bears in Canada. I like the local ones best.
I recently went on a Walkabout to our local Madrona Marsh. It was great and I had fun with all the blooming plants!

(39,397 posts)I would love it if a store or club would do that around here.
The Observatory looks like a fascinating and very scenic place for a group of photographers! Love your photos!
CaliforniaPeggy
(155,891 posts)The walkabout idea is one that they often do. I've been on two of them now, and the organization and implementation are great.
It's been years since I've been to the Observatory and I was eager to see it! I'm glad you enjoyed my photos. I have things to learn about dark skies photography. It will come with time!

(155,891 posts)I know your photos would have been so damn good, so much better than mine.
Mine are OK. But someday I will have another opportunity and I hope I will have learned what I need to know to make great photos after dark.
Still, it was great to be there.
