I adopted a Greyhound off the track many years ago that was like that with an old basketball. He was obsessed. He'd keep it rolling, and chasing it, lay down a few minutes while slobbering on it, then go again. At it for hours.

I'd say she was a bit neurotic with the ball, but that's a hell-of-a-good type of neuroticism!

Left at the pound with her sister after they got "too big" and "too unmanageable." Her sister was a little quieter, evidently, and did finally get adopted, but that left Lexy alone, all by herself in a cage. Once a month for at least 3 months in a row, someone would adopt her, and within a week bring her back to the pound to surrender her. She'd been back after the last surrender for 3 months when I found her. After hearing her story and looking into her eyes, and knew I had to give her a chance. After bringing her home, we realized she had no concept of how to "dog"... to this day, she'll watch a ball sail over her head with no thought of catching it and bringing it back to us, no matter how we've tried to "teach" her. We have a slew of cats around here. Lexy "cats" better than she "dogs." (LOL)

She's about 120 pounds of sheer muscle and energy. She's now about 4 years old, and I keep hoping she'll slow down a little. I'm 90 pounds of aging flesh... and I feel so bad for her that I only found her when I was probably way too old to be good for her. But I DO cook most of her meals, myself... which she adores by showing me how fast she can eat it up and then giving me a kiss and a huge wag of the tail which nearly knocks me over. Told hubby I now understand why some breeds have their tails docked. I never agreed with the practice... although I don't count it as a survival mechanism like I do cat's claws... that long tail of hers has enormous power.

While I don't know if I'll outlive her, or the other way around... I've made arrangements that neither she nor any of the cats will ever lose this home they've known all their life, and will have loving care for the rest of their lives. It may not be "mama" giving it, but at least I can die knowing they'll be loved and taken care of. That's the best we can do, IMO.
