if the majority population of this country, just didn't pay taxes? Could they arrest all of us?
I don't mean to sound ignorant, I honestly don't know though.

Wage garnishment, asset seizure, whatever it takes.

(1,543 posts)to do it with the majority of us? I'm not talking about a small group of people, more like millions of people.

(21,781 posts)and something like that happened, they would GET the manpower.
The IRS is not to be messed with. Ever.

(1,543 posts)But, how long would it take to get the manpower? And how long until they figure it out?
I know it's an impossibility. And I don't mind paying taxes (well...not lately as who knows where the money is going). and that it would hurt us 10x fold. But, we really have to do something BIG, we have to!

(21,781 posts)My opinions:
There is too much personal risk involved where we could reach a point where millions of people would stop filing their tax returns.
But if it somehow did happen, I can pretty much guarantee that the IRS will eventually get their due. It might take them awhile, but they'll get their money, plus interest and penalties. They will absolutely ruin your life. They'll strip your bank accounts, take your home...whatever they need to do.
Additionally, there would be consequences if everyone stopped paying their taxes, or otherwise tried to use this as a form of protest. Nothing would get funded, and this country would essentially cease to function.
The IRS gets money from payroll withholdings, etc, but they also get money when you file your tax return, if it turns out you owe over what they have already received from you. Not everyone gets a refund at tax time, and sometimes, the IRS is owed substantial money when taxes are filed.
Good question though.

(1,543 posts)What can a regular guy do to really change things around? I go to protests, send $, sign petitions, etc., and, honestly, I'm ready to fight more and I don't know what to do! I pride myself in the ability to quietly fight, now I want a mega-phone loud enough for even the heavens can hear and shout "Enough"!
I was just reading about the 1400's, then saw this just this morning.

now, I ask what can I do more?

(21,781 posts)It's been proven that change occurs when 3% of a country's population protests en masse in the streets.
That's what it takes...3%.
That's a very difficult number to achieve. We are almost there, but not quite.
Unless we can hit that 3%, we're stuck. It can't be less than 3% of 330 million, or whatever our current population exactly is.
Barring that, the only other "solution" is mass violence, which opens up another can of worms.
Certain people in this country can skirt laws with impunity, because the justice department is compromised. When there is no actual enforcement foisted upon these people, then there are no actual laws that these people must adhere to. It's maddening.

I guess you could claim 15 dependents on your W2?
I dont think its worth the time or effort. Tax adits by the IRS are not fun.
Have rebellion in my blood, and it's boiling over...sorry.

Me, too but dad gum it that pesky IRS always wins! 🙄
