Oh, and I can't trill my "R's" either... Fortunately, those in Costa Rica, Bogota, Colombia, parts of Mexico, and many in Puerto Rico do not trill their "R's" either. Then again, my Spanish is bad enough that it wouldn't matter overall.

First time I ate it, I was sure I was being pranked. meanwhile a coworker mocked me because I never want to try anything different.

(4,043 posts)Is it did not happen until we ate at some awful
Mexican restaurant at a mall in PA. Before that, cilantro was no problem. But, that salsa at that restaurant tested like dove soap. Now, all cilantro tastes like that to me. It was immediate. Not sure what happened.

Now, w/ the loss still, and I'm older, much older, I am glad I don't have perfect hearing. My SO told me that hearing everything isn't always the thing that one wants. They're right. Sometimes (or rather, a lot of times), it's nice to block out things, hearing-wise.

(682 posts)I don't have a problem trilling my r's There was a Ruffles potato chip commercial where the catchphrase was "Ruffles had ridges" said in a mock English voice. If you can imitate the commercial you should have no problem trilling your r's.
LogDog75
(682 posts)Started doing this as a kid and I can still do it. When my niece and nephew were very young and started acting up and wouldn't behave I'd turn my eyelids inside out. It scared the crap out of them and they'd settle down. After that, whenever they wouldn't behave I'd threaten to make my "monster eyes" and they'd behave.

(21,379 posts)Chocolate covered peanuts, and put the nuts back in the can on the buffet. Afew days later, our daughter and her fiance stopped by while they were riding a motorcycle. My husband and I were rearranging the back bedroom and didn't immediately come out to the living room to greet them. When we did come out, they were eating the peanuts from the can my Mom had left on the buffet. We were mortified. I managed to get the nuts put away and give them something else. That happened 30 years ago, and we never spilled the beans. And I never will!
Who even does that?!?

(6,232 posts)the meaning of trill
CrispyQ
(40,032 posts)You flutter your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Personally, I think trilling is easier to produce with a D sound than an R sound, but Ruffles potato chips cashed in on it with a commercial years ago.
MIButterfly
(916 posts)You know, like the sound a pig makes or that some people make when they laugh too hard. I try and try and I just can't do it. Years ago, I had a boyfriend who would laugh every time I tried because I tried so hard. He would ask me why it was so important to me and I said it's because it's something that everybody can do and I can't.

But, my daughter did get me some castanets like I had as a child, so that sorta makes up for no snap now.
OldBaldy1701E
(8,480 posts)But that damage was externally caused. It eventually healed.
Nowadays, I can snap my right okay, but my left can be slow to work, or just won't work. What I have pretty much lost is my ability to play guitar. I just cannot hold the strings down for the entire length of a song anymore, or I cannot move them fast enough.

A super smeller. Not sure if thats a thing. Its not always a good skill to have. 😂😂😂
Harker
(16,642 posts)She says "stinks" more often then I use the words "a" and "the" combined.
I can't smell ant farts. I can't smell Lily's breath from the other side of the house. I don't know when someone's pumping gas at the Citgo station downtown.
I can tell when someone just passing by me has a sinus infection. Seriously.
I can smell water. So, I usually know about a leak before it presents itself.
I think my son has the same thing,
When he was little, he and his best friend had identical Batman costumes that they wore ALL the time. Occasionally they would take them off. Then, when he wanted to find his , and put it back on, hed smell them both and say, yep, thats mine!.
I have to buy everything unscented as smells can overwhelm me.
Harker
(16,642 posts)I'd never thought about heredity having a role in it, so thanks for leading me to a new line of inquiry!
On balance, if you don't mind me asking, is your heightened sense a positive thing or problematic?
My dear departed first wife lost her sense of smell from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Once a year or so, though, a flower's fragrance would come through, and it was a cause for great joy.
bamagal62
(4,043 posts)Positive thing than a negative one.
The only thing negative is when there are lots of smells together in one place such as the first floor of a department store with all of the perfumes or the candle section of a novelty shop
.a mixture of smells is tough. I didnt realize for the longest time that everyone didnt smell to the degree I do. So, it seems normal to me.
