This is my least favorite day of the year. Me, the cat, and the dog all leave our bodies with each firecracker.
It's going to be a long day/night.

(12,241 posts)I had some sedatives for my old retriever but threw them out after he died.
The feeling of leaving your body is horrific.
It's like you spontaneously turn into molecules.

The ace bandage wrap should help. It's much like using Temple Grandin's cattle press for people on the spectrum to calm them, or a weighted blanket.
It's a neurological calming effect.

(4,448 posts)He would literally try to climb the walls. It wasn't just fireworks, but thunderstorms, and even the snowplows clearing the roads in winter.
We asked our vet at the time(RIP) if we should tranquilize him. He said by the time the tranquilizers took effect, the loud sounds would likely be over. He recommended desensitization to noise through audio tapes, but the dog was no dummy, and knew what was real and what was artificial.
We finally figured the only way to calm the poor baby was to let him lay under the desk, with my Mom sitting in the desk chair in front of him. It had to be Mom too, it couldn't be me or my sister.
The others we had over the years we could just turn on the TV or play music loudly and they would immediately calm. My current Shepherd,Dakota, just runs around barking until it stops. I think he's convinced he's just saved me when it does. 😆
I hate fire works.

(72,182 posts)My pittie "protects" my adult gs during thunderstorms & fireworks, too.
Your Shepherd was no fool. With alpha sitting by the desk, the awful noise could never penetrate her boundary.
I detest fireworks, too. Another example of human folly with complete disregard for our planetary neighbors, or the planet herself.
Imagine being a bird or bunny during this obnoxious display of human stupidity...

(4,448 posts)One of the other neighbors started to set of fireworks without warning the rest of us. The neighbor with the horses and his sons had to rush out and get the horses moved to a higher pasture so they didn't hurt themselves or jump the fence. Some people have 0 consideration for anyone but themselves. I guess the two had a talk and at least the guy with the fireworks agreed to give advanced notice the next time. They both have since moved away.
