I was a building kid from waaay back: cardboard "bricks", ?Lincoln logs, Tinker Toys(!), Legos.
Occasionally, I've have had Legos as an adult, too.
I love architecture, and wow, some the Legos sets are so cool, but unaffordable by me. This just got prompted by the new Lego LOTR Booknook "Balrog & Gandalf" set!
If I could only have one, it'd be The Taj Mahal; preferably the 700$+ version! 😄 But I'd happily take the ?89$ one. Such a glorious building!
Then Notre Dame, Riverdell (LOTR), Falling Water [Frank Lloyd Wright], and the tree house.
I have passed Notre Dame on a gifted trip, saw a real tree house on friend's partner's property, only seen the Guggeheim here in NYC, and Rivendell only in my imagination.
Oh, and if you wanted them to make a Lego set for a real, or imagined place what would you pick? 👍
Just thought of this - so I have to think 🤔about it. 😄

(25,320 posts)under british rule , could only afford toothpicks . straws and others were too expensive.

(21,533 posts)I actually made a toothpick sculpture. It was for a grade school art class.
I like that appelation: "builder kid".
I was lucky to have middle class parents that could afford certain things, though less after my mom got so sick from severe asthma when I was around 5 yrs old. Improved later, thanks goodness!
Went on vacation w 5 of us by plane to Florida in '58. Had to be pretty expensive back then!. Then my mom got sick. So I'm guessing we might have been closer to upper middle class, then doward to almost lower middle class.
What have you built with?
Because I draw among other things landscapes with rocks, and mointains...I've seen self made Lego rocks faces, and waterfalls 'scapes on google. They are sooo cool. I want to build a small one; just thecrocky part. 🙂👍

An engineer? Good on him.
I think I eyed an erector set, but never got one.

(4,526 posts)...I got my kid into them and he does them to this day and is getting his daughter into them which I think is great. The ones that he does that amazes me is the botanicals. Still does building and robots and other machinery too. He has a space problem and I don't think his wife sees the displays of lego things all over the house as a design ideal so he is stuck with some shelves and desk space in his office.

Ohhh, dear! 😄 Well, I can see both sides of that.
Never tried the robot, or machine stuff by the time they came out. Glad he's getting his daughter into it.
I was a later aged kid (girl) [about 6 - 8 yrs onward] who started to partly gravitate towards "boy" things; building, science and spirts, as well loving fashion & jewelry (more "girly" things). This was all more designated stuff in the early 1960s. Luckily living in NYC made it easier to do those kind of things vs like a red state, red city, or town.
Maaaybe my dad wanted a son (just me and my sis), do maybe he was happy I loved some of that stuff. My mom had really serious drafting skills used during WW2 so she had a less typical woman's life of rbst time in some ways. So I don't think she minded either.

(15,134 posts)and we also engneered some killer forts, tre houses and bike ramps!!!
I'd love to do a Eiffel Tower...maybe even a cool star wars or fantasy castle... haven't looked at their big sets. Not sure if they even have those...

(21,533 posts)where I learned to ride.
One year we built a icy snow "fort" at my cousins. Not higher than 2 ft? 😄 Maybe more like a wall.
Tree houses! I watch Tree House Masters on ? Pluto TV.

(15,134 posts)We had one that the neighbor's dad built... Everyone else could reach the "ladder" rungs naled into the tree but me. They'd all go up and yell down at me to bring the kool aid & cookies, I th8ink I only ever got u there once. (Lots of bugs and very dirty, I was NOT impressed, LOL)
We had acreage in the wine country foothills near Healdsburg, CA... My sister and I made a fort in the front yard with wood and corrugated metal for a roof. We'd sit out there in the rain for hours just listening to it on the tin roof
electric_blue68
(21,533 posts)Oh, no, about the tree rung being just too high for you! How frustrating!
The tree house show... I enjoy the building of it aspect, the finished result of the build, then adding the interior design, and the clients' reactions! What fun!
I can rewatch a bunch of them. I know I haven't seen quite all of them yet, as well.
