We were on our way home from my cataract surgery, and I had a patch over my right eye, so my wife was driving. We're close to home and for some reason traffic was stopped just before our turn. Suddenly a bouncy little Corgi was in the middle of the street, so I jumped out of the car and coaxed her over to me. I speak fluent dog, so she showed me her belly for a rub. I picked her up and calmed her, thankful that the traffic was slow and she didn't get run over. We lost our little Shi Tzu to old age a month or so ago, and I wasn't about to let this little one become a grease spot on the street.
I knocked on a couple of doors with no response. It's not exactly an upscale neighborhood, being old houses right on the highway, but one woman apparently recognized the pup, and said she lived up a long driveway a few hundred feet down the road. She had her name and address on her collar, so we headed up the driveway, and then met a distraught young woman on her way down. We stopped and established that Lola was her dog, and we returned her to her mom, who's expressing tearful gratitude for our taking the time to save the pup and find her mom.
A satisfactory ending to a potentially disastrous scenario. We were glad we were there at the right time, since no one else could be bothered with a stubby-legged dog in traffic.
We felt all warm and fuzzy all the way home.

I'm looking forward to getting the shield and patch removed later this morning. Another hour + drive up north. The lack of depth perception is disconcerting. I get to go throughout all again with the left eye in a couple of weeks. The procedure was a piece of cake; these people know their stuff, and were absolutely delightful.

(2,274 posts)... that the woman who came out to guide us the the right address knew where she lives suggests that she's been a naughty little pup before. I hope her mom can keep her from doing it again.
