Reading about and watching coverage of the tornadoes shook loose a memory of my Dad.

When there was a tornado warning, Mom and Dad would put us kids in the basement, under the laundry tub. Where lived SPIDERS!!!! I'd much rather risk a tornado that get gnawed to death by a vicious, long fanged spider!!

Dad would join the other dads on the block, standing at alert in front yards while scanning the sky for funnel clouds.

I now do the same thing. No more spider infested hiding places for me. Unless, of course, I see a funnel cloud.

We didn't have a basement so we had to sit in the bathtub or under our beds.
