(242 posts)Don't know about the other, but didn't Mel Brooks play someone named Goddard in Life Stinks? I don't know if Bolts was the last name.

Billy Wilder was one of the greatest! One, Two, Three sounds familiar. Is that with Jimmy Cagney? I think I remember seeing that years ago, but I don't recall much about it. He was an American businessman in Germany after the war, right?
VGNonly
(8,104 posts)for Best Supporting in this film, very well deserved.
Jimmy Cagney played such a manic comedic role in One, Two, Three that he was exhausted after the film. He retired for 20 years, only to play in one more film (Ragtime) in the 80s. His role in Mister Roberts was masterful!

(7,588 posts)Cagney was just fantastic. And William Powell was in his finest form. The whole cast was awesome, really, but it was one of Jack Lemmon's very best roles, which is saying a lot. He won Best Supporting Actor for that part. He's one of my all-time favorites, ever. He was great in The Apartment, another fantastic Billy Wilder classic. But him and Walter Matthau together, that's one of the best teams ever on film!

It's one of my favorite film genres...the high contrast lighting and character elements a protagonist, villains, femme fatale etc,. just appeals to my eye and sensibilities.

(16,264 posts)I grew up loving film noir (and I include a lot of 30s-40s horror) for all the aspects you mentioned.
I borrowed a deluxe edition of "The Maltese Falcon" that included a 1930 version that starred Ricardo Cortez as Sam Spade, and featured Dwight Frye as Wilmer the gunsel. Well worth watching, brush, if you get the chance.

One of the other female singers, Maria Doyle (as Natalie Murphy) popped up in the very funny 1997 movie "The Matchmaker" starring Janeane Garofalo and Milo O'Shea.
(btw, Hark, there's another member of The Commitments on the list at the top)
