McConnell says a fall led to his hospitalization, breaking weeks of silence about health condition

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Sen. Mitch McConnell on Sunday revealed for the first time that a fall led to his hospitalization, breaking the silence about his condition after weeks of mounting speculation about the Kentucky Republican's health.
McConnell, 84, said in a statement that he also suffered a case of mild pneumonia and has undergone a battery of tests as doctors try to determine what led to his fall. He explained the long silence about his condition by saying that "folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older." "Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct -- I can't help it," he said.
McConnell said he is now in a rehabilitation center and will not be returning to the Senate "quite yet." He said he continues to work with his staff on Senate business in the meantime. The statement included a smiling picture of the senator with his wife Elaine Chao, a tacit response to speculation online that McConnell had died or was incapacitated.
McConnell had provided little information since his hospitalization on June 14, his office insisting only that he was "receiving excellent care" and recovering. As his hospital stay grew longer, speculation grew so intense that Kentucky's Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear took the extraordinary step of asking that McConnell update the public about his health in a "transparent manner."

(54,272 posts)This is ridiculous. Politicians make statements all the time when there is a medical issue or emergency. If nothing else, he owes that to his constituents.

(54,272 posts)but it is inexcusable to just blow off the voters leaving them wondering if their representative is coming back or is at death's door. Meanwhile, they have staff who should be putting out timely press releases.

Im not buying this story at all. It seems like the gop has used grahams death to further try to muddy the waters about McConnells condition.

(5,097 posts)The timing is suspicious. Within hours of Graham's death, Mitch reappears with newspaper "proof of life."
Not buying it.

Strange IMHO.
My doctors have confirmed that I didnt break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didnt have a heart attack or a stroke. I dont have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital."
Hospitalized for a month for falling down and having a mild case of pneumonia. Now he's been moved to a rehab center.

(24,370 posts)but in this new age of AI is it real or is it memorex? Plus I haven't seen any articles where Elaine Chao
returned to the U.S., not saying she didn't, I just haven't seen any and I believe with all the speculation
about Mitch's where abouts any reporter that seen her return from overseas would have reported on it.
I want to see him talk and answer questions, until then I'm a doubting Thomas.

(25,239 posts)He was walking along with aides and others and all of a sudden made a sound and crumpled. The sound preceded his fall. And the fall didn't look very serious. He had a neurological incident, again.

(4,294 posts)Is there any proof of he wrote this statement himself? If not, it's rather irresponsible to report this in such a definitive manner, IMHO.
Has the picture that was released with the statement, referred to in the article, include any actual proof of life, presently? I mean, the guy has been in hospital plenty of times in the past.
I mean, personally I doubt MM is actually dead-dead. But "not physically/mentally capable of composing a statement of this nature" involves a different degree of speculation. As long as someone is not ruled dead yet, there's going to be a lot of latitude WRT what legally needs to be publicly revealed. But someone dying is much more a matter of public record.

(2,685 posts)That picture means nothing. It could be real or fake. For one thing, he looked like death warmed over in the last known photos of him. In this picture he looks amazingly good for someone that has been in the hospital for weeks. Also the hands have that not quite right AI texture. The newspaper is a nice touch, but it's almost too convenient.

Chao Chao's response:
Elaine Chao, wife of Mitch McConnell, issues statement after US return
Courier Journal

Chao's travel during McConnell's hospitalization fueled unfounded conspiracy theories online.

Chao's staff did not indicate whether she'd been in contact with McConnell since returning home, according to the CBS affiliate WLKY in Louisville. She left for the trip to China on June 12, just two days before McConnell was hospitalized, according to the outlet.
Also amid the swirling news cycle, the Kentucky senator's youngest daughter, Porter McConnell, deleted her social media account on X, according to the Independent.

Mitch McConnells daughter deletes her X account as questions swirl over health after his hospitalization
It is unclear when or why Porter McConnell, a progressive-leaning political activist who previously directed the Take On Wall Street campaign, deleted her account.
The Independent has contacted Porter McConnell for comment.
Porter McConnell is one of three daughters the senator had with his first wife, Sherrill Redmon. She frequently posted criticism of the Republican Party on the now-deactivated account, TMZ noted.

(9,388 posts)Is there an underlying condition that precipitated the fall? He certainly didn't fall on his head; no marks or bruising there.
Nothing I can see on his hands or wrists either.
I know, baseless speculation, but a month is a long time to be incognito as a US Senator.

AP collaborates by making it sound like he actually talked to them.
That picture with his wife looks AI. Isn't she in China? The pillow seems to be supported against a wall angle, but there is no bend or corresponding dimple. The depth between Mitch and pillow looks wrong.
