Trump denies disaster aid for 4 Democratic-led states
Source: Politico
Trump on Friday rejected $227 million in aid requests from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island for help recovering from a major snowstorm in February. Two days earlier, Trump approved Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster aid for six Republican-led states, while extolling the political virtues of GOP politicians and candidates in the states.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement that there is no politicization to the Presidents decisions on disaster relief, adding that Trump provides a more thorough review of disaster declaration requests than any Administration has before him.
Democrats immediately questioned Trumps denials, arguing that they follow a pattern disclosed by POLITICO in March of Trump mostly rejecting disaster aid for Democratic-led states while approving it for states that are led by officials in his party.
On the same day you approved major disaster declarations for several Republican-led states, you chose to leave Rhode Islanders out in the cold, the states congressional delegation comprising four Democrats told Trump in a letter Monday. It is unacceptable to politicize the disaster declaration process.

Im no constitutional scholar, but I think its rather obvious that running what is essentially a protection racket using taxpayer money does not count as seeing that the laws are faithfully executed.

Nobody who worked for this administration should be allowed to hold a government job ever again.

(4,150 posts)"TALLAHASSEE President Barack Obama on Thursday rejected Florida Gov. Rick Scott's request for a federal disaster declaration for Tampa Bay's August flooding, adding another chapter in an often antagonistic relationship between the two that dates back to before Scott took office."
"Scott has repeatedly sued the Obama administration over veterans programs and federal hospital funding programs while challenging the Affordable Care Act, which Scott spent millions of dollars of his own money to fight in television commercials even before he ran for governor.
"Now, for at least the fourth time in less than three years, Scott is the recipient of a rejection letter for a disaster declaration from the Obama administration. Since 2004, governors have received disaster declarations sought from the federal government more than 85 percent of the time. But Scott has suffered a 50 percent rejection rate since taking office in 2011."
And thanks for asking the question - it deserved a serious answer.

Thereâs some pretty compelling evidence to the contrary.

President Donald Trump denied disaster aid to four Democratic-led states in a move that is raising new questions about whether hes injecting political motivations into emergency management decisions.
The pattern has hardly gone unnoticed.
Members of Rhode Islands congressional delegation sent the president a letter earlier this week, explaining, On the same day you approved major disaster declarations for several Republican-led states, you chose to leave Rhode Islanders out in the cold. It is unacceptable to politicize the disaster declaration process......
In other words, even as the White House tells the public that there is no politicization to the presidents decisions on disaster relief, Trump has literally connected campaign endorsements to his approvals for aid requests, a move that has no precedent in American history.
PETERS: Yes or no, do you think it's right for a president to approve disaster aid based on whether a state voted for him instead of the amount of damage in the state? This chart behind me is pretty dramatic

MARKWAYNE MULLIN: That's not my experience of the president
P: This chart speaks volumes
.....Never in my lifetime has a president treated disaster relief as a political cudgel, Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said in response to the data. What President Trump has done to politicize disaster relief and hold up support for Americans who need it including my constituents in Washington state is frankly unforgivable.
