Trump proposes painting executive office building white

President Trump has submitted plans plans to paint the Eisenhower Executive Office Building white to a group that advises on architecture in Washington, D.C.
The French Second Empire-style, slate-gray building houses office space for members of the president's team, including the National Security Council.
The building sits across a driveway from the West Wing and was completed in 1888. The plans submitted by the president say that the Eisenhower Executive Office Building is an eyesore that has long been criticized and has fallen into disrepair since its completion. The plans say "the color, design, and massing of the existing structure does not align visually with the surrounding architecture and lacks any symbolic cohesion with the White House." The plan points to examples of cracks and poor exterior maintenance and argues, "The benefit to painting the stone is that it is repeatable."
"The inability to bring the stone facade back to a baseline color has plagued the maintenance of the [Executive Office Building] in the past, and and will continue to plague it if not addressed," the plan says. The plans included renderings of what the building would look like if it's painted white.

Psychologically, this kind of makes sense. I know when I have a problem I can't deal with, I'll take on less important projects or clean the house to distract myself seeking small productivity wins in the face of it. 2. Shopping. Send in a picture of an (expensive) car with two color options. Please, Sir, I need an opinion from someone who is always in control. Which one of these cars should I buy to make me look more powerful? Thank you Sir.
3. Dining. Send in a picture of a restaurant menu (preferably expensive). Please, Sir, you always know the right thing to eat. What should I order? Thank you Sir.

(7,193 posts).... when it was recommended that it be torn down....
The Presidents Advisory Commission on Presidential Office Space recommended the demolition of the Old Executive Office Building, originally the State, War, and Navy Building, now the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, in 1957.
Key details regarding this recommendation (H. Doc. No. 85-211) include:
Recommendation: The 1957 report urged the demolition of the Victorian-style, granite building, then often called the "EOB" or "OEOB" and replacing it with a new structure that would be more in keeping with the character of the White House.
Context: The report was commissioned by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who viewed the building as a "monstrosity".
Outcome: The recommendation was not immediately acted upon due to growing sentiment to preserve the historic building, which ultimately saved it from destruction.
Subsequent History: Ironically, the building was later named after President Eisenhower in 2002.
I doubt TSF had anything to do with the current proposal. It's just the bureaucracy carrying on, trying to maintain an old stricture that is hard to keep up.
IMHO it should be torn down and replaced. As Eisenhower said, it is a monstrosity. Putting paint on it is not going to change that.

That is some pile of granite! or of whatever!
The style reminds me of one of those fake "village" or "small town" suburbs that is around where I live: Maple Lawn. Not quite as overboard, but still reminiscent. The area gives me the creeps. It's like a Walt Disney version of the Stepford Wives.

The stacks and layers of columns also reminds me or another disturbing low-brow architectural quirk - Note the "classical" columns stuck onto the facade at the top of the thinner brick structure - What the hell are they doing there? It's some sort of decorative gimcrack gimmick, and they stuck them on high so they can be seen from aways away. Very hokey.

Yes, I'm a critic.

(7,193 posts).... keeping an even, uniform tone over the natural stone facade is time consuming and expensive. Much harder than just slapping on some paint. The paint will be easier and less expensive to keep up.
Other than that, the building looks dilapidated and decrepit. If the renderings are accurate, it looks better painted white. It's still pretty ugly, but an improvement.
Blues Heron
(8,879 posts)They dont sand it down to keep it even toned or anything, its just granite. Its not supposed to be painted at all. Its a really cool looking building, painting it will be tantamount to turning it into a wedding cake looking monstronity though. Its not dilapidated or decrepit at all, you are falling for trumps propaganda.

Stone isn't wood. If you have stone, you are talking a porous material and when the U.S. Capitol rotunda dome was renovated 10 years ago, the parts that were stone had to have special paint (most of the rest was wood or cast iron that had it's own special paint).
What is usually done with these types of buildings, is power-washing (I know my own FDR-era sandstone federal building was power washed back when funding was available for renovations in the '90s and later under Obama's ARRA program) but, they certainly didn't put any paint on it.
I had posted here the last time this came up - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10143565982
And included in a reply there was a pic of that building under construction during the late 1800s -

Shrub's archived WH site had a history on the building - https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/history/eeobtour/historicalview-1800.html

Trump Officials Sued for Plan to Repaint Eisenhower Building (1)

President Donald Trumps plan to clean, repoint, and repaint the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House would violate several laws and must be stopped, a lawsuit says.
Painting the buildings gray stone facade white, without complying with the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act, would cause permanent harm to the National Historic Landmark, Cultural Heritage Partners PLLC and other preservationists told the US District Court for the District of Columbia in a Nov. 14 complaint.
....................
Cultural Heritage, a law firm committed to protecting historic places, says the building is in the National Register of Historic Places and serves as the anchor of the National Historic Landmark historic district near the White House.
On or about Nov. 10, the suit says, Trump stated during an interview that he planned to paint the building white and that it needed cleaning and pointing, as well.
But this plan, if it advanced, would run afoul of NEPA, which requires federal agencies to assess the environmental consequences of proposed actions before making decisions that will affect the environment, the complaint says...................

(27,594 posts)or did your esteem architecture firm not tell you that...............the paint will peel away..........
Should you paint slate?
Typically, paint manufacturers do not recommend coating slate. Slate is a natural stone that can degrade over time, and sections may delaminate, particularly if they're not sealed with a slate-specific sealer. This makes it very difficult to guarantee that paint will adhere properly or last
And has for Marble..............you idiot.................. temperature will cause the paint to flake and peel.........
And then if this does happen you can change that name also...................you know besmirch another taxpayer funded building......just so your ego says you can do it like a fascist dictator...............after all you are krasnov............
